Repeated patterns can be soothing or enraging.
These photographs of ice formations (taken by Japanese artist Ryota Kajita in Fairbanks, Alaska) call to mind the comforting repetitiveness of a series of circular mandalas. My dear friend, Evergreen, created a horizontal collage of found “mandalas” for me years ago. It hangs on the wall of my office and serves as a guard against work-related madness.
Here’s a film still from 42nd Street, a perfect mandala of legs.
Hurricane season is upon us, with its swirling cloud mandalas.
